How Does a Differential Pressure Transmitter Measure Flow and Level?

Although a Differential Pressure Transmitter (DP Transmitter) is primarily designed to measure pressure difference, it is also one of the most widely used instruments for flow measurement and closed tank level measurement in industrial applications.

For flow measurement, the transmitter works together with a primary flow element such as an Orifice Plate, Venturi Tube, Flow Nozzle, or Pitot Tube. As the process fluid passes through the restriction, a pressure difference is created between the upstream and downstream sides. The DP Transmitter measures this differential pressure and converts it into an accurate flow rate using established flow calculation methods.

DP Transmitters are also commonly used for liquid level measurement in pressurized tanks. The High Pressure (HP) side is connected to the bottom of the vessel, while the Low Pressure (LP) side is connected to the vapor space at the top. By measuring the pressure difference, the transmitter accurately determines the liquid level regardless of the pressure inside the tank.

One of the main advantages of this method is that the sensing element does not need to be immersed directly in the liquid, making it suitable for corrosive chemicals, fuel, oil, hot liquids, and other demanding industrial applications.

To achieve accurate measurements, proper selection of the pressure range, specific gravity, wetted materials, and installation method is essential. For flow applications, selecting the correct primary flow element is equally important, while level applications require accurate tank dimensions and liquid density data.

Because of its versatility and reliability, the Differential Pressure Transmitter is widely used in oil & gas, petrochemical, water treatment, power generation, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and many other industrial sectors where precise flow and level measurement is required.
